Bubble Baths and Lizzy

The other night when I was filling the tub to soak after long and tense day as the water was going up so were the bubbles this a curious and strange thing to Lizzy who is only over 6 months old. So Lizzy climbed onto the edge of the tub and stuck out her paw to feel those strange fluffy white things and then moved her head to the nearest pile and tasted it because who knows it could be a new type of food but was to discover that no it wasn't but was sure fun to play with. Lizzy during the whole kept playing and staring at the white clouds on top of the water and became brave and attempted to walk all around the tub even attempted to jump onto the low soap dish but at the last minute decided she miss it and end all wet just last the night before when it was her turn to get her bath her first and she did not want to get all wet again it took a long time to get dry.

Allie dances the Nutcracker

Going to the theater has always been a relaxing and exciting event but going to see Allie perform as a Clown dancer in the Nutcracker ballet was truly a new and unique experience to enjoy. From young to old the ladies of the stage dazzled the audience with their ballet steps and colorful costumes. Having seen a big production of this ballet before I definitely enjoyed the fun atmosphere of this young troupe of dancers very comical when the toy soldiers fought with the mice after one got shot this brought several smiles and laughter to the audience and oh those mice were cute. Allie was cute as button in her makeup and costume with lots of glitter in hair she looked like she having lots of fun dancing. I am looking forward to the next dance maybe we will hear the sound of tap shoes.

Twelve Tips in Helping people and their families living with Autism during the holidays

While many happily anticipate the coming holiday season, families of people on the autism spectrum also understand the special challenges that may occur when schedules are disrupted and routines broken. Our hope is that by following these few helpful tips, families may lessen the stress of the holiday season and make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. The following tips were developed with input from the Autism Society, the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, Easter Seals Crossroads, the Sonya Ansari Center for Autism at Logan and the Indiana Autism Leadership Network..

1. Preparation is crucial for many individuals. At the same time, it is important to determine how much preparation a specific person may need. For example, if your son or daughter has a tendency to become anxious when anticipating an event that is to occur in the future, you may want to adjust how many days in advance you prepare him or her. Preparation can occur in various ways by using a calendar and marking the dates of various holiday events, or by creating a social story that highlights what will happen at a given event.
2. Decorations around the house may be disruptive for some. It may be helpful to revisit pictures from previous holidays that show decorations in the house. If such a photo book does not exist, use this holiday season to create one. For some it may also be helpful to take them shopping with you for holiday decorations so that they are engaged in the process. Or involve them in the process of decorating the house. And once holiday decorations have been put up, you may need to create rules about those that can and cannot be touched. Be direct, specific and consistent.
3. If a person with autism has difficulty with change, you may want to gradually decorate the house. For example, on the first day, put up the Christmas tree, then on the next day, decorate the tree and so on. And again, engage them as much as possible in this process. It may be helpful to develop a visual schedule or calendar that shows what will be done on each day.
4. If a person with autism begins to obsess about a particular gift or item they want, it may be helpful to be specific and direct about the number of times they can mention the gift. One suggestion is to give them five chips. They are allowed to exchange one chip for five minutes of talking about the desired gift. Also, if you have no intention of purchasing a specific item, it serves no purpose to tell them that maybe they will get the gift. This will only lead to problems in the future. Always choose to be direct and specific about your intentions.
5. Teach them how to leave a situation and/or how to access support when an event becomes overwhelming. For example, if you are having visitors, have a space set aside for the child as his/her safe/calm space. The individual should be taught ahead of time that they should go to their space when feeling overwhelmed. This self-management tool will serve the individual into adulthood. For those who are not at that level of self-management, develop a signal or cue for them to show when they are getting anxious, and prompt them to use the space. For individuals with more significant challenges, practice using this space in a calm manner at various times prior to your guests' arrival. Take them into the room and engage them in calming activities (e.g., play soft music, rub his/her back, turn down the lights, etc.). Then when you notice the individual becoming anxious, calmly remove him/her from the anxiety-provoking setting immediately and take him/her into the calming environment.
6. If you are traveling for the holidays, make sure you have their favorite foods or items available. Having familiar items readily available can help to calm stressful situations. Also, prepare them via social stories or other communication systems for any unexpected delays in travel. If you are flying for the first time, it may be helpful to bring the individual to the airport in advance and help him/her to become accustomed to airports and planes. Use social stories and pictures to rehearse what will happen when boarding and flying.
7. Know your loved one with autism and how much noise and activity they can tolerate. If you detect that a situation may be becoming overwhelming, help them find a quiet area in which to regroup. And there may be some situations that you simply avoid (e.g., crowded shopping malls the day after Thanksgiving).
8. Prepare a photo album in advance of the relatives and other guests who will be visiting during the holidays. Allow the person with autism access to these photos at all times and also go through the photo album with him/her while talking briefly about each family member.
9. Practice opening gifts, taking turns and waiting for others, and giving gifts. Role play scenarios with your child in preparation for him/her getting a gift they do not want. Talk through this process to avoid embarrassing moments with family members. You might also choose to practice certain religious rituals. Work with a speech language pathologist to construct pages of vocabulary or topic boards that relate to the holidays and family traditions.
10. Prepare family members for strategies to use to minimize anxiety or behavioral incidents, and to enhance participation. Help them to understand if the person with autism prefers to be hugged or not, needs calm discussions or provide other suggestions that will facilitate a smoother holiday season.
11. If the person with autism is on special diet, make sure there is food available that he/she can eat. And even if they are not on a special diet, be cautious of the amount of sugar consumed. And try to maintain a sleep and meal routine.
12. Above all, know your loved one with autism. Know how much noise and other sensory input they can take. Know their level of anxiety and the amount of preparation it may take. Know their fears and those things that will make the season more enjoyable for them.
Don’t stress. Plan in advance. And most of all have a wonderful holiday season!

Adventures of Lizzy the Kitty

Lizzy has been quite busy since she has recovered from her kitty cold after she first arrived. Here is a list of her favorite things to do so far.

Favorite toy: Blue the fish with a bell inside loves to play fetch with it: She is better at this game than the dogs.

Favorite place to sleep: On the top of my pillow curled around my head.

Favorite non food item to try to eat: She loves to try to eat toilet paper and kleenix, but any paper will do in a pinch.

Favorite dog to tease. She loves to bug and tease Chi Chi the most, Mippers is gets curiousbut leaves her alone and Chi Chi whines at her no barking yet.

Favorite thing to do in the bathroom: Climb between the shower curtains while the shower is running. She also likes to climb the outside of the curtain to see how high she can go she is a bit of a dare devil.

Lizzy likes to talk when no else is talking



Somethings she does not like.

Lizzy does not like to be left alone for too long especially when she knows you are in the house.

Lizzy also dislikes when you are cleaning or in the room not playing or petting her.

Lizzy does not like to travel in her carrier but does not mind the vet as long as they do not stick a themother up her butt, this really disagrees with her rather have a shot than that.

Lizzy hates the pounding that comes from upstairs: Dad is putting in wood flooring, lots of noise.

Grand Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve


What a drive or ride on Labor Day. But the view of the large dunes of sand and the mountains was worth it and also the stamp in NPS book another to the collection. Who says I do not go any where now days. The picture above was not taken on that day and not even by me since there is no snow yet on the mountains.

Welcome to the the Family Lizzy



After nearly a month without a cat I went to the Humane Society and fell in love with this cute and adorable two month kitten. She loves to play, cuddle ,sleep and explore. She did developed a cold and suffered with sneezing , a visit to Animal Emergency Hospital which disagreed with her but with time , medication and love she is recovering and becoming quite to funny little kitty to watch as she explores everything including the inside of the bathtub. At the Humane Society they gave her the name Minnie and it just did not fit her so after a day of tossing around different names I finally choose Lizzy which fits her very well. So the adventures of Lizzy the kitty begin.




Wedding in the Tetons

This was taken at the wedding site after most of the clouds lifted the one above was taken at Jackson Lodge where the luncheon was at.

In August I had the privilege of attending two friends wedding that was held at Grand Tetons National Park. After a nearly ten hour drive from Colorado Springs to north west Wyoming where I stayed the night just outside the park at a Hostel a different experience from staying in a hotel and definitely cheaper. The wedding was on Saturday I got up early and had breakfast, it was a very chilly morning and drove around the park and visited the visitor center before the wedding. They picked the perfect spot in the park for the wedding and then lunch at the lodge another breath taking spot and great for moose and elk spotting. It was a great to catch up with some rangers and families I had worked and known while working at Oregon Caves and to meet some of the current rangers who are working there and also to meet Derek's and Rachel's families and friends. I enjoyed both wedding and the park in fact I want to spend more time at Grand Teton National Park.

So sorry it has taken awhile to post this book blog. I currently reading the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini I have finished Eragon and reading Elder at the moment. This young writer has created a story with more color and creativity that I have not seen in several years. I am looking forward to continuing on with this story and can not wait to see how it ends.

Goodbye Rueben

Though Rueben has not lived with us for a long I am just as sad to hear about his death and to grieve for him along with the rest of the family. Losing a pet is hard, I just lost my cat two weeks ago. Both Patches and Rueben are together playing in the fields in heaven and curling up at the feet of God and the Angels.

Farewell Patches

This blog is a farewell to my cat Patches she has been my friend during hard and good times always seemed to be there when you needed comfort and something to cuddle. Patches after living in my current home finally learned to use the dog door and about a week ago did not return this makes me sad and mad also but the hope of her return is little due to the wild animals that hunt in this area. I will miss her and never forget her and still I hope to hear her meow at the door at any time. I do not know if I can get another cat for awhile for it hurts too much to think about replacing her. I hope there is a cat heaven for I can not think of her in any other place except for here at home curled up in a box or on my bed.

New Blog subject

I think I will start a book blog. What I mean is that once a month I will blog about a book I have read or am reading . I will try to stay with new books but I do often re read my favorites so those will probably slip in every once in awhile. Since currently I am not reading a book but I have two library books that are mysteries one is a Mary Higgins Clark and the other a Mary Jane Clark two of the three of my favorite mystery authors the other is Nevada Barr. I read all kinds of books from history to Mystery and Romance just depends on what kind of mood I am in. This is first book blog but will not count for this month since its really not about a book.

Pelosi and Poltics are just plain annoying these days

I really find Politics interesting and frustrating these days. Our senators, Representatives and even our president and vice president were elected on the foundations of democracy and the say of the American people are tearing down these very foundations in which was layed down by our founding fathers. They tell us those how are protesting the health care bill are unpatriotic. It like saying to John Adams, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, shut up you are servants to the British crown and there for have no right to protest these taxes. America was founded on one the biggest protests in American history second to the civil war and that was also fighting to free a people and save the union so I say to Pelosi and others who have the same opinion as her is tell all Americans read the bill understand its true ramifications on this country, write your congressmen and go to any these meetings you have a voice and it does matter. Yes we need health care reform but not socialized medical care were we the patient no longer in charge of our medical needs and cares. Those with friends in Britain, Canada talk to them find out how hard it is to get treatment and they even prefer coming to the US for their extreme medical needs when their system does care if you live or die. Remember this more Americans are not for the Health care Bill than for, the government just wants you to think that a small amount people are protesting it.

Thank You

This country sometimes has plain frustrating and crazy values focuses. Here we spend more time on mourning and celebrating actors, singers and other stars than we do our veterans and current serving military men and women. In this time veterans of World War Two are passing away we grandly and more grandly eulogize Micheal Jackson than we do the men who are dying who fought to protect the liberty and freedom of this great county. We spend more time gossiping about what celebrity is doing what and who with than we do to take the time to say Thank You to the current serving men and women in military or give sympathy and encouragement to the families of those men and women. I believe that the veterans and current serving men and women are more deserving of higher acclamation than any celebrity no matter how much they make, what movie or song they have made or even who they are married or divorced. Military men and women in the past and in the present volunteered to give their time and their lives if need to protect us from terrorism and anything that threatens the liberty and freedom of this country and others We should remember this everyday and be grateful for their selfless devotion to America. So as a US citizen I say Thank You to every current serving men and women who are protecting me today and to the Veterans who served to protect this great country and helped it make it the way it is today.

Why take a GRE exam?

I looking into going back to school and getting my Masters in History, but there is no way I could pass the GRE exam so I am looking into finding a graduate program that does not require the GRE and boy there are not many. Why does anyone need to take any standardized test for a graduate program let alone just to get into University I was lucky with my BA. All these tests do is stress out a prospective student who does not need any more stress in their lives. No more GRE., ACT, SAT exams stop them now. Does anyone know of a history graduate program that has no required GRE exam?

Overnights

I am working the second of three overnights this weekend. Fighting sleep on the second night is harder than the first I can not imagine what it will be like tomorrow night. To those who have in the past or currently working overnights in whatever field of there choice you will understand. What is different from most overnight shifts here is that no one does this shift on a constant basis it is just thrown in every week or two depending on the need so we mostly work daytime shifts so it sometimes throw our clocks off for a few days after. Well back to cleaning while the kids are sleeping (lucky them).

Dad's Project

I can not believe he did it why I should be surprised at this point I do not know he has always had his projects and most of them are uniquely his own or something he read or heard about and still puts his own twist on it. Dad and his projects making his own sauerkraut something he heard about when hosting our garage sale and I believe it was a neighbor this time. Being that I do not like it in the first place I will not be a taste tester with this one. Hopefully it will go better than when he tried to make his own crackers and bagels. Well it late and even though I have the off tomorrow I think I will turn in for the night.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. Universal government health care will put millions out of jobs and cheapen the system to where no one can get good health care and it will stop the advancement of new technologies and developments in the system.

Recovery

Well its been a long road but my recovery is at a point that I can now return back to work. For those who not heard I spent from mid January to early March suffering from two herniated disks in my lower back and extreme nerve pain in both my legs which was only resolved by back surgury in early March. Recovery was longer than I wanted due to restrictions that resulted in a longer wait to return to work than I wanted, but oh well thats over. I will be returning to work on Monday and I will try to never to complain about work again.

In Pain but now I understand why

I am getting better but still not working. Doctors have taken an MRI of my back I have two herniated disks in lower back region which what is causing the sciatica nerve pain in left leg. Have to wait for the neurosurgeon appointment to see what's next, that is scheduled for next week. The game the moment is wait and see and keep the pain under control.

Why

Sleep I very much need will not come too much pain and too much on my mind. I ask myself why did this happen and why now. Questions that I can not answer and God knows I hope. I have been diagnosed with herniated discs in my lower back region which what is causing the nerve pain. I already been out of work almost two weeks how much longer will the healing take. I question in my mind will surgery be option and will it work? To be free of pain would be great but this may be message to me that alot things in my life will need to change probably including my job direction to less physically demanding one, mabey It is the push I need to go back to pursing a career in history. Questions continue to swirl around in my head but think my medication has kicked back into gear so I can sleep again. Talk to again soon.

When I sick or upset she will always be near ready for pet of comfort and will often look at you and say I understand with her eyes and soft meow. She has helped me keep relaxed when muscles in my left leg and back wanted to scream out in agony. Patches has been a constant companion keeping me from getting too lonely.

Ten ways to keep you more or less bored when on bed rest

Well I have really done it this time. Doctor required me to bed rest for a week and no work. So what do you do when you pretty much have to stay laying down either in bed or on the floor.


1. Read until your eyes are too tired to read anymore
2. Watch movies, DVDs and television until your tired of that source of entertainment
3. Listen to your mp3 player and play with other features to keep occupied
4. Work on your computer laptop until the battery dies on you then wait
5. Try to get family to stop working or doing whatever they are doing to have talking time
6. Call friends or family long distance to talk with them also
7. Sleep way too much
8. Pet your cat and any other family pet that comes close enough to touch
9. Try to get up at least three times a day to take care of hygiene and other personal cares
10. Take your pain meds on time to keep most of the pain away and try not to scream when it hurts.

Repeat as often as needed to keep from going crazy.

Happy New Year brings so much pain

Happy New Year. This is the posting of 2009, I was unable to post until this moment since the past two weeks I have been working since with school was out on holiday which meant I worked. Then when all was back to normal the pain in my left leg and tenderness in back started up again. Trying to get a normal doctors appt in this town is crazy just to get appt with my primary physician
I would have to wait until after the 20th I called on the 7th and 8th. As of this moment I am looking for a new physician. Pain is still there and I am not willing to pay 75 dollars for a Urgent Care co pay so the search and pain goes on. Well I am sorry for to go on about my problems which could be a lot worse and more stressful. So I am going to look positive at this experience atn least at the end of it I will have a new doctor. Well that it for now.

Overnights at work

Well for the first time in almost a year I am doing an overnight weekend. Thats right it means staying up and working all night for two nights in a row. While the kids may or may not sleep I can not and most find projects when kids are sleep to keep me awake.
